Millie and Louis were overjoyed to learn they were expecting twins, a common occurrence in Millie’s family. Their excitement, however, turned to heartbreak when doctors informed them that both babies had anencephaly, a rare condition where parts of the brain do not fully develop. Tragically, one of their daughters, Skye, passed away shortly after an emergency C-section, while their other daughter, Callie, was born healthy.
The devastating loss of Skye deeply impacted Millie and Louis, and they quickly realized the emotional pain that can come from well-meaning but insensitive comments about multiple births. One particular incident drove this point home when someone unknowingly made a lighthearted comment that left Millie in tears, prompting her to leave the room. This painful moment inspired the couple to take action, leading to the creation of the “Skye High Foundation.”
Their foundation introduced the purple butterfly sticker, now seen in NICU units worldwide. This sticker discreetly signals that a family has lost one of their babies in a multiple birth, helping to prevent painful remarks during an already challenging time.
Through their foundation, support groups, and initiatives, Millie and Louis offer comfort to grieving parents. As Millie explains, “I can’t stop this from happening, but the more support groups we can set up and put things in place like the stickers, the better it will be.” Their efforts, rooted in their own grief, are making a lasting difference for families dealing with the heartache of infant loss.
