Maria’s Journey of Forgiveness and Rediscovery
Maria grew up without a family, raised in foster care, and never felt like she truly belonged anywhere. At 35, her life took an unexpected turn when her biological mother, Caitlyn, reached out to her for the first time. Caitlyn claimed she was sick and wanted to meet. Initially, Maria ran, unwilling to face the woman who had abandoned her. But after learning the truth about her mother’s situation, she regretted her decision forever.
A Life Without Family
Maria had always been on her own. Even as a child, her foster family never provided the love and warmth she had craved. When she turned 18, Maria left their home and cut off all contact, determined to live independently. By the time she was 35, she had built a successful career in marketing in Wichita, Kansas, but her personal life was lacking. The only person she considered a friend was Sara, a coworker.
Maria’s therapist, Dr. Melissa Schroeder, pointed out that her inability to form meaningful attachments, especially with men, likely stemmed from her abandonment as a baby. Her foster parents had only taken her in for government money, never truly caring for her, which left Maria with deep emotional scars.
“I’m sure my foster family’s disdain for me also had something to do with this,” Maria sarcastically remarked to her therapist one day.
“You understand what I’m saying then. There’s no point in coming to therapy if you don’t want to work on getting better. You’ve accepted many things you can’t change, but now it’s time to enjoy life. You’re still young,” Dr. Schroeder encouraged.
A Call from the Past
After her therapy session, Maria wasn’t expecting anything to change. She was content with her solitude and didn’t believe anyone could break down the walls she had built around her heart. But her life took an unexpected turn when she received a phone call.
“Hello? Is this Maria Lewis?” a woman’s voice asked on the other end of the line.
“Yes, that’s me. How can I help you?” Maria replied, unaware that her life was about to change.
“My name is Caitlyn. I’m your mother,” the woman revealed.
Maria stopped in her tracks, shocked. The woman who had abandoned her was suddenly back in her life. Caitlyn asked to meet her at the Riverside Café the following evening. Despite her initial hesitation, Maria agreed, her mind swirling with unanswered questions.
Confronting Her Biological Mother
The next evening, Maria found herself sitting at a table in the Riverside Café, waiting for Caitlyn. When Caitlyn arrived, Maria couldn’t deny the resemblance between them. However, she wasn’t interested in small talk and quickly demanded that Caitlyn explain herself.
“I was just 16 when I had you. I couldn’t raise you. My parents were awful, so I left you with the Marksons, thinking they were the best family on the block,” Caitlyn explained, her voice filled with regret.
Maria didn’t hold back her frustration. “They weren’t. I haven’t talked to them since I turned 18. I even changed my last name.”
Caitlyn went on to explain that she had been diagnosed with cancer, but Maria didn’t want to hear it. She assumed her mother was there to ask for money and angrily stormed out of the café, leaving Caitlyn behind.
Maria had harbored a small glimmer of hope when Caitlyn first called her, but that hope quickly turned to anger and frustration. As far as she was concerned, Caitlyn had abandoned her and didn’t deserve another chance.
A Heartbreaking Revelation
Months passed, and Maria tried to forget about the encounter. But then, she received a call from a lawyer informing her that Caitlyn had passed away. The lawyer asked her to come to his office to discuss Caitlyn’s will.
When Maria arrived, the lawyer handed her a letter from Caitlyn, along with the news that her mother had left her everything in her estate, including two houses and a large savings account.
Shocked, Maria opened the letter and began to read. Caitlyn explained that she didn’t want money from Maria. She knew her cancer was terminal and had only wanted to spend time with her daughter before she passed.
“My cancer is terminal. There’s nothing anyone can do. I wanted to spend time with you before I passed. It wasn’t out of guilt since I could never make up for leaving you,” Caitlyn wrote.
She went on to express her deep regret for abandoning Maria and explained that she had thought about her every day since then. Caitlyn had hoped that leaving her estate to Maria would atone for some of her mistakes.
Maria was overwhelmed with emotion as she read the letter. For the first time, she realized that Caitlyn had genuinely loved her, despite her past mistakes. She couldn’t hate her mother anymore. She had been just a scared teenager who made a terrible decision.
A Path to Healing
After reading Caitlyn’s letter, Maria went to her mother’s grave and wept. Kneeling by the gravestone, she spoke words of forgiveness and sorrow. “I forgive you, Caitlyn. I mean… mother. I’m sorry for not listening. I didn’t want to hope for something I never had. But I promise you I will find love and be happy,” she vowed.
Determined to make changes in her life, Maria returned to Dr. Schroeder and committed to following her therapist’s advice. She opened herself up to the possibility of love and started building stronger relationships with the people around her.
A few years later, Maria had transformed her life. She adopted a cat, as Dr. Schroeder had suggested, and eventually met a wonderful man. Maria, who had once believed she was destined to be alone, found love and happiness.
Lessons from Maria’s Story
Maria’s story teaches us several important lessons about life, love, and forgiveness.
- Listen to your therapist. Therapy is a valuable tool for healing, but it only works if you’re willing to follow through with your therapist’s advice. Maria initially resisted her therapist’s suggestions, but when she finally opened herself up to change, her life improved dramatically.
- Be open to love. Maria’s difficult childhood caused her to close herself off from meaningful connections. However, her experience with Caitlyn taught her the importance of being open to love and relationships.
- Forgiveness can bring peace. Holding onto anger and resentment can weigh you down. By forgiving Caitlyn, Maria was able to find peace and move forward with her life.
